Health Insurance Options for 2010 Graduating Seniors - graduates basically have three options to consider if they wish to maintain continuous insurance coverage. In our opinion, going without insurance is not a viable option.
*     Remain on their parents’ plan. If the graduating student is under the age of 26 and if their parents have current health insurance, they may be able to remain on their parents’ plan. Although this coverage change under the new health care reform bill will not take effect until September, several major insurance companies are extending the option to students at the time of graduation. The family should research these options with their current insurance company/agent.
*     Purchase individual health insurance. For healthy young adults, these policies may be quite affordable and offer a broad range of plans with differing coverages and deductibles. One possibility may be a short-term plan which would provide several months of basic protection while the student is in transition. The student should research and discuss options with a reputable insurance company/agent and compare plans.
*     Enroll in an employer-sponsored health insurance plan. If the student has found employment, he/she will be most likely be offered a health insurance plan as part of their employment package.

July 15, 2010 - House Bill Keeps Maximum Pell Grant at Current Level

Most other student aid programs would be held at their 2010 levels under the legislation, but Rep. David Obey, the Wisconsin Democrat who heads the panel, noted that the measure would provide the first significant increase in a decade in job training grants through the Workforce Investment Act.

News from the 2010 Advanced Placement Annual Conference - At the Advanced Placement Annual Conference, which took place last weekend, College Board Vice President Trevor Packer stated that the future of AP curriculum is changing.  The benefit of an AP course load in high school has been documented by research showing that AP students perform better and are more likely to graudate on time than "matched peers" (academic equals) who do not have AP credit. Time management, work ethic and thinking skills that AP students learn directly correlate to an enhanced college experience.
