The Successful Telephone Interview - "Stand Up, Smile and Deliver" |
 |
The telephone interview is becoming increasingly important to employers when asssessing potential candidates for positions. Economics have made it difficult to bring candidates to headquarters for personal interviews. |
The telephone call from an employer may come at a scheduled time or at the whim of the interviewer. Here are some things you can do to prepare for the interview:
* Set aside a designated space as your interview area - remove all distractions. * Turn off call waiting immediately upon answering the phone. * Stand up. Your voice will project much better with an erect posture. * Smile. The tone of your voice will improve and your enthusiasm will be more evident. * Speak slowly and enunciate clearly. * If the call is prescheduled. warm up your voice by speaking or singing prior to answering the call. * If it is an unexpected call, clear your throat prior to answering the call. * Tape your resume to a wall where you can view it while standing and speaking on the phone. * Have a list of cue word responses available for typical questions, in easy to read print. * Keep all research materials on the employer within easy reach of the phone. * Have a notepad available to take notes. * Have a glass of water handy. * Deliver. Respond promptly but thoughtfully to the interviewer. * Be prepared to close the call with a thank you and query about the next step to be taken. * Send a thank you note as soon as possible.
Good Luck!
